Sectors
Environmental analysis doesn’t stop at the lab door.
Here’s how PalmChrom fits into different kinds of work.
Environmental Agencies & Water Utilities
Skip the sampling campaign. Analyze at the source.
Water utilities and environmental agencies lose days, sometimes weeks, moving samples from the field to a certified lab, while contamination events don’t wait. PalmChrom performs automated, high-sensitivity chromatographic analysis directly at the source, whether that’s a treatment plant, a river monitoring point, or the site of a spill. Deploy it permanently with Iridium satellite connectivity and receive chromatograms and results in your inbox, or bring it along for rapid on-site screening during an incident.
- Continuous, remote monitoring of raw water, wastewater effluent, and target contaminants (pesticides, pharmaceuticals, industrial residues)
- Rapid on-site screening during spills, leaks, or agricultural runoff events
- Permanent field installations in remote or hard-to-access monitoring stations
Field Scientists & Remote Research Teams
Full chromatography, wherever your fieldwork takes you.
Whether you’re working on the coast, at sea, at altitude, or deep in the field far from the nearest lab, PalmChrom lets you run real chromatographic analysis without hauling samples back to a stationary instrument. Compact and battery-powered, it travels with you and reports results by satellite, even from remote research stations.
- Long-term unattended deployment in extreme or hard-to-reach environments
- Compound-specific quantification in the field: the exact molecule you target, not a family of compounds
Analytical Laboratories
Automated sample preparation, for the instruments you already have.
Not every lab needs another chromatograph. Many need the step before it: cleaning up and concentrating the sample, which most labs still do by hand, and which is the slowest and most error-prone part of the analysis. PalmChrom automates it inside its bead injection valve, standalone or coupled to your GC, HPLC, or ICP. The sorbent bed is renewed automatically, so each sample can get a fresh one, with no cartridges to change.
- Solid-phase extraction in 13 seconds, more than 285 samples per hour, with 4 mg of sorbent (20 per hour with a fresh bed for every sample). See Sample preparation under turbulent flow with renewable sorbent, Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry, 2021
- Enrichment factors of up to 250 for trace analysis. See Versatile injector for inline renewable solid-phase extraction, Analytica Chimica Acta, 2024
- Fully automated: no manual processing, no human error
Citizen Science Projects
Chromatography, made accessible.
PalmChrom needs no extensive training to operate. Inject the sample, select what you want to measure, and get results in 20 minutes. That simplicity opens real analytical chemistry to community monitoring programs and citizen science initiatives that would otherwise depend entirely on distant laboratories.
- Community-led environmental monitoring, and food and feed checks
- Self-reliant households and hobbyists who want their own analytical capability at home
- Educational and outreach programs that put real instrumentation in participants’ hands
- Low-maintenance operation suited to teams without a dedicated lab technician
PalmChrom’s architecture also fits other at-line and in-process applications, from industrial quality control to food safety screening. If that’s your case, get in touch, I’m happy to discuss customization.
PalmChrom is completing final certification, expected by the end of 2026.
